Products Description
TSX Screen roller screen — also called a wobbler feeder or disc screen — is a non-vibrating screening machine built for bulk material that blinds conventional screens. Separation happens through the gap between slowly rotating disc-fitted shafts, so the machine keeps screening where a vibrating screen would plug: wet coal, clay-bound ore and sticky feed. Featured model: 1.8ZS-24.
Model 1.8ZS-24 · Non-vibrating, no blinding · 42CrMo shaft assemblies · PU cleaners 85–90 Shore A · Modular shaft decks
What Is a Roller Screen?
A roller screen is a screening machine whose screening surface is made up of several parallel shafts, each fitted with shaped discs arranged in a staggered pattern. The shafts are driven at the same speed and in the same direction, forming a rolling screen surface that both transports and separates the material.
Because the “aperture” is the gap between the shafts and discs — not a mesh opening — the cut point is set mechanically and stays stable even when the feed is wet or sticky. The roller screen is widely used for pre-screening ahead of a primary crusher, for crusher discharge, and for control screening after crushing.

Key Components & Technical Requirements
Screen Shaft Assembly
The shaft assembly is the working heart of the roller screen. Each unit is manufactured to the customer’s original drawings or reverse-engineered 1:1 from an existing part, so it drops into the machine without modification.
Technical requirements
- Material: 42CrMo alloy steel, quenched & tempered, HB 240 – 280.
- Shaft diameter & overall length: 1:1 per original drawings or old parts; journal tolerance ±0.05 mm, length tolerance ±1 mm.
- Dynamic balance: ≥ G6.3 per ISO 21940.
Cleaner
Each shaft runs against a cleaner that continuously cuts away fibrous debris and sticky build-up, keeping the screening gap open. This is what makes the roller screen viable on material that would shut a mesh screen down.
Technical requirements
- Material: Polyurethane (PU), 85 – 90 Shore A.
- Dimensions: per original drawings or actual part measurement; tolerance ±1 mm.
How Does a Roller Screen Work?
- Feeding — material is fed onto the first shafts at the feed end of the machine.
- Transport & loosening — the disc-fitted shafts rotate in the same direction as the material flow. The staggered discs lift, tumble and loosen the bed, so the material moves forward as an even-thickness stream with a controlled acceleration.
- Separation — the gap between adjacent shafts and discs forms the screening aperture. Particles smaller than the gap pass through under gravity and the rotating force of the shafts and become the undersize fraction.
- Discharge — oversize material is carried along the shaft deck and discharged at the end of the machine.
- Self-cleaning — the PU cleaner set at an angle below each shaft cuts away fibrous debris and sticky build-up continuously, keeping the gap open.
Key Features
1. No Blinding on Wet & Sticky Material
The screening action is created by rotating shafts, not by vibration through a mesh. Wet coal, clay and sticky ore do not pack into an aperture, so the screen keeps its cut point and its throughput when a conventional vibrating screen would blind.
2. Self-Cleaning Shafts
Every shaft carries an adjustable PU cleaner (85–90 Shore A). It runs continuously against the shaft, removing fibrous and sticky build-up — the main reason roller screens are specified for sticky feed.
3. Non-Vibrating, Fully Enclosed
There is no vibration, so dynamic loads on the structure and foundation are low and operating noise is minimal. The enclosed housing contains dust, keeps rain and snow off the screening zone, and is fitted with inspection windows.
4. Modular Shaft Decks
Shaft assemblies are built as modules and bolted to the machine body, so a single module can be replaced without dismantling the whole screen. Wear liners are bolted, not welded, for fast change-out.
5. Low Wear, Low Power
Shafts run at low speed. Wear is concentrated on replaceable parts — discs, wear sleeves and cleaners — rather than on the main structure. Power demand is low relative to throughput.
6. Single-Shaft Redundancy
Each shaft is driven individually (motor + reducer through a coupling). If one shaft group stops, material is still pushed forward by the preceding shaft and screening continues while the fault is dealt with.
Roller Screen vs. Vibrating Screen
| Roller Screen | Vibrating Screen | |
|---|---|---|
| Separation by | Gap between rotating shafts | Mesh / panel aperture |
| Wet & sticky material | Excellent — no blinding | Prone to blinding and pegging |
| Vibration / dynamic load | None | High — needs reinforced support |
| Noise | Low | Higher |
| Typical use | Pre-screening, coarse sticky feed, scalping | Fine & medium classification, dewatering |
| Wear parts | Discs, sleeves, PU cleaners | Screen panels / media |
| Speed | Low | High |

Where a Roller Screen Is Used
- Pre-screening ahead of the primary crusher — removes fines before crushing, cutting unnecessary crusher wear and allowing a smaller crusher for the same plant output.
- Crusher discharge — handles the surge and the sticky fraction from the crusher.
- Control / scalping after crushing — separates fines from the circulating load.
Industries: coal handling and coal preparation, power generation, mining and metallurgy, cement, sand & aggregate, solid waste and refuse-derived fuel.
Materials handled: coal, lignite, coke, clay, iron ore, gold ore, copper ore, nickel ore, lead-zinc ore, limestone, aggregates, and wet or sticky bulk solids.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a roller screen used for?
A roller screen separates and transports bulk material using slowly rotating disc-fitted shafts. It is mainly used for pre-screening before a primary crusher, crusher discharge, and control screening after crushing — especially on wet, sticky or clay-bound material.
What is the difference between a roller screen and a vibrating screen?
A roller screen separates through the gap between rotating shafts and does not vibrate, so it handles wet and sticky material without blinding. A vibrating screen separates through a mesh aperture and is better suited to dry, free-flowing material and finer cuts.
Does a roller screen have screen panels to replace?
No mesh panels. The separation size is set by the gap between shafts and discs. Wear parts are the discs, shaft wear sleeves and cleaners, which are individually replaceable.
Can the separation size be changed?
The gap is set by the shaft spacing and disc geometry, so it is fixed for a given machine configuration. Tell us the cut point you need and we configure the shaft deck accordingly; variable-gap designs are available on request.
How does the screen handle sticky material?
Each shaft is fitted with a cleaner made of polyurethane (85–90 Shore A) that continuously removes build-up from the shaft and discs. This self-cleaning action is the main reason roller screens are specified for sticky feed.
What capacity can a roller screen handle?
Capacity depends on width, shaft count, gap setting and material characteristics. Send us your material, moisture, target cut point and required t/h and we will size the machine.
Is the roller screen noisy or does it need a heavy foundation?
No. It is a non-vibrating machine, so dynamic loads are low, noise is low, and foundation requirements are much lighter than for a vibrating screen.
